My name is Susan Farlinger and I am the liberal party candidate for the Vancouver Island riding of Courtenay-Alberni.
As a long time resident of central Vancouver Island, a retired public servant, mother in a large family, biologist, natural resource manager and outdoor enthusiast, I see an opportunity to reflect the voices of our communities in a majority Liberal government.
Challenges of a changing climate, the need for real reconciliation to help us grow together, and a sustainable and green economic recovery are priorities for me personally and for this area.
I support future-looking inclusive and social values, legislation and policies that respond to climate and social shifts that are changing the world we live in. That is why I am running for the Liberal party. I want to support actions on the ground, some emerging, some yet to be built, to realize these goals in rebuilding our economies -- forward.
There is much change that we face here in this riding, across the country and the world.
I am seeking the opportunity to make a contribution, to put my energy and experience to work for the diverse people and communities in this riding -
- to ensure our voices are heard in the federal government
- to help us work together on the ground, and
- to support and build sustainable forward-looking solutions into our future.
Biography
After finishing my Master's degree in fish biology at the University of Guelph in 1977, I began working as a fisheries biologist at the Pacific Biological Station in Nanaimo, then moved to fisheries management in Prince Rupert in 1983, where I ultimately became part of the national team developing the Aboriginal Fisheries Strategy. In 1995 I returned to the south, living in Nanoose and working as Director in Aboriginal Fisheries, Fish Habitat and Enhancement and Resource Management at DFO Regional Headquarters and, after an exciting and challenging role as the Regional Director of the Pacific Forestry Center, returned to DFO in 2008 and ultimately moved to the position as Assistant Deputy Minister and Pacific Regional Director General for DFO in 2010.
After retiring from that post in 2016, I had the opportunity to lead the renegotiations of the Pacific Salmon Treaty, ratified by Canada and the US in 2019.
As a biologist, negotiator and senior public servant, I have learned from working in the ocean, rivers and forests, with fishermen, environmentalists, stewardship groups and aboriginal communities up and down the coast of BC and also in international fisheries negotiations. Experience in managing the diverse programs and relationships for Fisheries and Oceans and Natural Resources Canada in this region is based not only on my belief in evidence-based science but also in the critical role of the knowledge and experience of individuals and communities in crafting sustainable solutions and public policy.
I have enjoyed volunteering for and contributing to local charities, such as Errington Therapeutic Riding Association and Nanoose Family Services; and am an ongoing contributor and member of the Oceanside 100 Women Who Care, an organization that has contributed $382,700 to local charities since 2017. I have been a member of the Board of the Pacific Salmon Foundation.
